Tire Safety Guidelines
To avoid being stranded on the side of the road as a result of tire problems follow these tire safety guidelines:
1. Check the tire pressure on your car. This should be done once a month prior to long drives as well as after them. The recommended tire pressure is 30 psi.
2. Rotate the tires on your car. They should be rotated every 6000 to 8000 miles. Every tire wears differently, so be sure to check yours for wear.
3. Inspect the treads on your tires. Be sure to check and make sure your car’s tires have a tread depth between 2/32 inch and 4/32 inch.
4. Check you’re the alignment of your car’s wheels. If your wheels are not aligned correctly, it can cause quick and uneven wear. Wheels that are not aligned the right way can cause steering as well as tracking issues.
5. Make sure the deepest treads are on your back tires. If you have two tires that are newer and two that are older, keep the newer tires on your back wheels because newer wheels have deeper treads. These deep treads can better grab the pavement and channel water. This helps the rear tires avoid hydroplaning and fishtailing.
Keeping up with your tire maintenance, can help keep you off the side of the road. However, if you do end up on the side of the road it is a good idea to have the number to a good roadside assistance program on hand.
