What should you do if you are stranded on the side of the road during the winter in a snowstorm? In many parts of the United States and Canada, it is very possible that you can encounter severe winter weather. So, here are some safety tips for you until roadside assistance arrives to assist you:

1. Call for help immediately. It is smart to call your roadside assistance program for help. The longer you wait to make the call, the more there is an increased risk of being stranded even longer as the weather continues to get worse.
2. Stay with your vehicle. Experts recommend that you stay with your vehicle, with a few exceptions. If you know the exact distance you need to travel to get help, and you are absolutely positive you can make it and that help is actually available in that location, then even though it is still very risky, you may be able to improve your condition. If even one of those conditions are not met, it is not worth the risk of leaving your vehicle. However, if you have a cell phone and are able to call your roadside assistance program, even in the best weather condition, it is smart to stay with your vehicle, call your program and wait for them to come and assist you.
3. Make sure that your vehicle is noticeable. In order to ensure that other drivers and state troopers that are on patrol can see your car, hand a bright-colored piece of cloth from your antenna and light flares in front and in back of your vehicle a safe distance away from your vehicle.
4. Be sure that you stay warm. If your exhaust pipe is clear, make sure your run the heat for ten minutes, each hour. Also, be sure to use extra blankets and winter gear to help keep you warm.
5. Make sure you keep the windows on your vehicle accessible. Open one window slightly in order to keep the windows from getting sealed shut by ice or by snow.
